Take Action: Iowa

Iowa elections have critical importance across the board in 2020. There is the potential for the presidential race to go Democratic. Although Trump is currently winning the spread (realclearpolitics.com), the impact of COVID-19 on farmers for their produce going to commercial markets and the general state of the economy could turn this spread. In terms of Senate races, Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) approval rating fell from 57% in February 2019 to 47% in March 2020. Ernst is a key target in the Democrat’s quest to flip the Senate.

There are three key House races in 2020. Two of these flipped in 2018 - IA01 (Abby Finkenauer) and IA03 (Cindy Axne). IA 02 now has an open seat. The Cook Political Report ranks these three House seats as a Toss, leaning Democrat. However, the latest Des Moines poll in early March says that Republicans hold an advantage in each of Iowa’s four congressional districts. Iowa congressional districts are heavily gerrymandered making it even more crucial to get out the vote in Iowa to be part of the blue wave of 2020.
